Castelseprio – Torba

Nice place, especially for events, like the one I attended. Immersed in nature, lying on the lawn we listened to excellent music with Celtic harps. Good atmosphere, spectacular temperature when, on the other hand, you were dying of heat in the valley. On the same evening there was also the possibility of making astronomical observations with special telescopes made available. The archaeological park itself is not large but in the evening it is very nice, the finds are illuminated with reflected light and makes everything enchanting.

I visited this UNESCO site with Archeologistic and his guides. The place is beautiful in itself. Nature, woods, picnic area. It is close to my house. I had already been there several times. This time it was different and much, much more interesting. You guide them with a lot of passion and knowledge, they made us live those stones by telling us their story. From medieval Longodard Roman times to today. The excavations still interest many archaeologists from all over Italy, bringing to light many treasures now kept in the adjacent Antiquarium we visited. Pottery, swords, jewelry and gold coins. The whole is located on a hilly area. Walking alone I would never have been able to see the magnificent baptismal font behind the church. In ancient times it was always outside the church which could be accessed after purification. The floor is still there at intervals. Around the church there is a cemetery with ancient tombs whose tombstones bear what is a sword cross of the new converts. A large tank for the water reserves necessary to withstand the sieges, with an adjacent well. The mighty walls, other churches and the remains of housing units in continuous evolution. I highly recommend the visit even with school-age children but with a guide.

With friends We took a beautiful walk through woods and streams to get to the archaeological park of castelseprio, a Unesco heritage site. For me a wonderful surprise because I did not know him. A chat under the trees to breathe pure air in this context out of space and time is priceless. A must see

The highest marks, in addition to the charm and historical importance of the castrum (the small antiquarium is beautiful), is naturally due to the unique frescoes of Santa Maria Foris Portas. Living 15km away I often go back there, even yesterday (10 August), and here a tug of ears: leaving a UNESCO site closed from 1 to 14 August is really stupid, beyond any excuse.

Beautiful open archaeological site, with free admission. Walking in the greenery you can see ancient ruins, mostly Lombard, but also dating back to the Romans and Byzantines. Also worth seeing is the nearby church with beautiful frescoes. It is a World Heritage Site, absolutely not to be missed. Nearby there is also the monastery of Torba, but to book a visit with the FAI, you need to be more organized.

Bel parco interessante ma orari all’italiana.

Castelseprio was built when Milan became capital of the Western half of the Roman empire. Duke Ottone Visconti destroyed it in 1287 and forbade to ever rebuild it. An interesting example of non-classical archaeology. Admission is for free.

The Antiquarium is a building inside the Archaeological Park of Castelseprio, it was a small courtyard monastery, built in the 14th century already when the village had already been destroyed and hosted a regular religious community, inside the walls of the oratory they preserve late Renaissance and seventeenth-century frescoes, and then became a peasant farmhouse. Now renamed The Antiquarium, recently set up, it exhibits materials that illustrate the first prehistoric settlements, the life of the castrum from its foundation in the late Roman period, through its moment of flowering in the early Middle Ages, up to its destruction and beyond. Among the finds, the remains of fresco decorations recovered during archaeological interventions inside the buildings of worship and the Renaissance ceramics that emerged during the excavations of the same building stand out. Entry is free and only open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

I would have given 5 stars because the place is fantastic, and the thrill of being in the heart of the ancient Contado del Seprio is priceless ... So much potential! One of the most beautiful places i have visited, an absolutely amazing restaurant, incredible work done in the restoration, the setting is absolutely beautiful. The pasticcio was amazinnggggggggg. Unfortunately many things are missing, first of all the history of this amazing place just isn't explained in much detail, the amazing church with roman/post roman underground, the amazing walls that tell of past buildings being demolished and rebuilt, the amazing roman/longobard walls. There just isn't much being explained! I tried looking on the fai site and there are some more tidbits of information but it looks like they have a lot of work to do in translating the work done with the university of padova into more information on the place. Second it would be nice if fai managed to get an agreement with the nearby archaeological site that is almost always closed, if the two could be connected that would be amazing. Overall i would say to anybody to go and to make sure to observe the details of the buildings here, so much to think about.
